Frequently asked questions

How much tax does a freelancer pay in Spain in 2026?

It depends on your net income. The autónomos social security fee in 2026 ranges from €230/month (net income < €670/month) to €530/month (net income > €3,620/month). On top of that, you pay 15% IRPF (or 7% for new freelancers) and collect 21% VAT. Use the calculator to see your exact breakdown.

What's the difference between IRPF and VAT for Spanish freelancers?

VAT (21%) is collected from your clients and passed to the tax authority — it doesn't come from your pocket. IRPF (15% or 7%) is your income tax: it's withheld from invoices to businesses and adjusted in your annual tax return.

How does Self-Employment Tax work in the US?

US freelancers pay 15.3% Self-Employment Tax (12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare) on 92.35% of net earnings. You can also deduct 50% of this tax from your federal taxable income.

What is National Insurance for UK freelancers?

Self-employed workers in the UK pay Class 2 NI (£3.45/week if profits exceed £12,570) and Class 4 NI (6% on £12,570-£50,270 and 2% above). These contributions fund your state pension and NHS access.

How can I reduce my freelance taxes?

Deductible business expenses (office space, equipment, software, professional travel) reduce your taxable income. The more legitimate expenses you track, the less tax you pay. Frihet tracks your expenses automatically.

When are quarterly tax filings due in Spain?

Both Modelo 303 (VAT) and Modelo 130 (IRPF advance) are due quarterly: before April 20, July 20, October 20, and January 30 for Q4. Frihet calculates and files them automatically for you.
