Modelo 303 (Spanish VAT return)

What it is

Modelo 303 is the form businesses and professionals use to settle VAT with the Spanish Tax Agency. It adds up the output VAT on the invoices issued in the period, subtracts the deductible input VAT on invoices received, and declares the difference. The VAT regulation calls it a “declaración-liquidación” (article 71).

Period and deadline

The assessment period is the calendar quarter. Businesses file monthly when their volume of operations in the previous year exceeded 6,010,121.04 euros, and in the other situations listed in article 71.3. For quarters, the deadline is 1 to 20 April, July and October; the fourth quarter is filed from 1 to 30 January (article 71.4).

What has to be filed

The return is compulsory even when no tax fell due and no input tax is deducted in the period (article 71.1). Only taxpayers whose operations are exclusively those exempt under articles 20 and 26 fall outside it. The result can be payable, to offset or refundable. In the Canary Islands the equivalent tax is IGIC and it is reported in modelo 420, not 303.

Common mistakes

  • Not filing for a quarter with no activity.
  • Booking an invoice in the wrong quarter.
  • Deducting VAT on an expense without a valid invoice or unrelated to the activity.
  • Recording a reverse-charge transaction only as output, or only as input.
  • Mixing IGIC invoices and VAT invoices in one return.
  • Relying on an automatic summary without checking it against the VAT books.

How Frihet handles it

Frihet calculates a preview of modelo 303 from your invoices and expenses, using the official fields, and exports the fixed-width text file in the tax agency’s format. It does not file the return: you or your advisor do. The deadlines it displays come from a tax calendar that is marked partial in our product manifest, so confirm the date on the agency’s portal.
